Sustainable Fashion Circle: Meet the Makers

  • The Canvas by Querencia Studio 904 Lexington Avenue New York, NY, 10065 United States (map)

In the age where software reigns supreme, what does it mean – and take – to build a physical product? Come meet and hear from women of SFC who are taking matters into their own hands, literally.

1. Marie Douat, DOU.K Studio, @dou.k_studio
- After 5 years of experience managing made-to-measure divisions of several brands in Europe and New York, Marie decided to create her own label to offer a service of sustainable Made-to-Measure shirts for women and men in New York and Paris. Sustainability, transparency and high-quality define DOU.K.

2. Arielle Toelke, Four Rabbit, @four.rabbit

-Four Rabbit was inspired by sustainability, and lightweight traveling. Four Rabbit’s launch product the Tsunami Jacket is a unisex, recyclable, ultralight weight, packable, water-resistant, wind-proof, breathable travel layer.

- With an innovative design it’s not only zero-waste (nothing goes to the landfill during jacket construction), it is the ultimate “take it everywhere you go” travel jacket.

- The brand’s mantra “Look good getting lost” is an ode to the idea that your original style and artistic expression does not have to be compromised by responsible design.

3. Mary Bemis, Reprise Activewear, @repriseactivewear

- Reprise creates plant-based activewear for a cleaner workout. The activewear market is filled with plastic clothing that is coated in toxic, sweat-wicking and odor-resistant chemicals. Mary created Reprise to offer non-toxic apparel options made from Tencel, the wood of eucalyptus and beech trees. It's insanely soft, sustainable, and safer for your skin. Tencel is created in a nontoxic closed-loop process – so there's very limited waste and no microplastic shedding (#plasticfreejuly win!). The brand name fiber ensures that the trees were grown in a sustainably managed forest, and the entire production process uses about 80% less water than cotton.

4. Gabriela Fernandes-DaSilva, Consists Of, @consistsof

- Gaby is in the very exciting early stages of developing a product line. Our SFC community will be among the first to view her samples and concepts and hear more about the vision for Consists Of.

5. Miranda Watson, Miranda Watson, @mirandawatsondesign

- Miranda Watson is a Brooklyn-based womenswear designer. Her namesake brand employs upscale and unique approaches to the design of pockets and other functional aspects of clothing. All of their highly wearable garments contribute to sustainable fashion through the use of eco-friendly and recycled fabrics whenever possible. Miranda Watson stands for clean, minimal design with purposeful details, resulting in beautiful pieces for the everyday independent modern woman.

6. Anne Whiting, Anne James, @annejamesnewyork

- Anne James launched her semi-eponymous label in 2017 at the Adalinda Sustainable New York Fashion Showcase. Since then, her designs have been commissioned for Berlin Fashion Week and showcased
during London Frieze Week.

- Anne's work is centered around the ethos of creating a more sustainable fashion industry: this is a line that is entirely conscious, ensuring complete supply chain knowledge, transparency, and control, using
innovative yet gorgeous fabrics made of recycled materials, and manufactured in kind, human-friendly conditions which respect the lives of international garment workers.

-She is currently preparing for a presentation during New York Fashion Week in September of 2018.
